The most ideal state for a writer is when they can write freely—anytime, and as much as they want or can. The Hungarian Writer-in-Residence Program, operated by the Petőfi Cultural Agency, offers a unique opportunity for both Hungarian and international authors to do just that.
As part of the program, participating writers and poets can retreat to accommodations available in various Hungarian cities, where they can focus entirely on their creative work. They can stay for at least two weeks, or longer periods as agreed upon individually, while regularly documenting their local experiences in a journal format.
Currently, eight culturally rich Hungarian cities and towns welcome applicants to the program: Pécs, Debrecen, Pannonhalma, Nyíregyháza, Vácrátót, Vajszló, Kapolcs, and Balatonfüred. Each accommodation reflects the charm of its respective region, providing a tranquil, inspiring setting ideal for writing. During their stay, writers can explore the city's landmarks, surroundings, and participate in local cultural life. Time spent in these newly discovered cities often serves as a source of inspiration, with the spirit of the place and its unique motifs sometimes finding their way into the authors’ works. The program is set to expand with additional locations across the Carpathian Basin in the future.
Beyond participation by domestic and cross-border Hungarian authors, a key aspect of the program is involving international writers who create in foreign languages. During their residency in Hungary, these authors can gain first-hand insight into Hungarian culture and local values. They can leave their mark on the city’s artistic life, forge new experiences and friendships, and allow this influence to shape their creative output. The program’s long-term goal is to turn the participating cities and authors into cultural ambassadors, fostering a literary network that carries cultural, touristic, and diplomatic significance.
The Writer-in-Residence Program is continuously open to authors seeking a creative retreat. Interested individuals can express their intent to participate via the official program website under the "Application" section.
